August bank holiday: Social welfare and pension dates changed

The date for next week's social welfare payment has changed, due to the August bank holiday.

Those in receipt of social welfare will receive their payment earlier than usual as a result of post offices and banks being closed next Monday, 1 August with most people to receive their payments a couple of days early on Friday, July 29 instead.

All Intreo Centres and Branch Offices will also be closed on Bank Holiday Monday but will reopen as usual on Tuesday, August 2. Meanwhile, those who receive their payments through the post office will be able to collect them on Saturday, July 30.

Post Office payment arrangements

If your pension payment is due to be paid at a post office on bank holiday Monday, you will instead be able to collect it early on Saturday, 30 July. Meanwhile recipients who get paid by cheque due on bank holiday Monday should also receive it on Saturday.

All post offices will be closed on bank holiday Monday and will then reopen as normal on Tuesday, 2 August.

Child benefit

It is understood that the benefit payment, which is due on Tuesday 2 August, should not be affected although recipients may be paid early as has been reported in the past by recipients.

Most employees are given paid leave on Monday 1 August so if you qualify for the public holiday benefit, you are entitled to one of the following:

  • A paid day off on the public holiday
  • An additional day of annual leave
  • An additional day's pay
  • A paid day off within a month of the public holiday

If you’re a part-time employee, you are entitled to a day's pay for the public holiday if you meet both of these conditions:

  • You have worked for your employer at least 40 hours in the 5 weeks before the public holiday
  • The public holiday falls on a day you normally work

According to Citizens Information: "You can ask your employer at least 21 days before a public holiday, which of the alternatives will apply to you.

"If your employer does not respond at least 14 days before the public holiday, you are entitled to take the actual public holiday as a paid day off."
