A woman and child have been killed in a horror crash after an Audi smashed into a luxury car dealership.
The vehicle collided into a wall outside a Jaguar store near Leeds city centre this morning. A 999 response raced to the incident Sheepscar after crews received a report at 8.30am.
Paramedics attended, however the woman and child were found unresponsive at the scene. It is believed they were pedestrians.
The Mirror reports both had been hit before the Audi crashed into the wall. They were tragically both pronounced dead a short time later.
The Audi driver - a male - was taken to hospital and was placed under arrest. West Yorkshire Police said his injuries were serious, but not life-threatening.
Detective Inspector Paul Conroy, of the force's Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “This is an absolutely tragic incident, and we are working to support the family of the woman and child involved. We have already spoken to a number of witnesses but are keen to speak to anyone else who has witnessed the collision itself or the events leading up to it.
"We would also ask anyone who was in the area around the time of this collision to check their dashcam footage.”
The major road remained closed and flanked by police vehicles on Monday afternoon as collision detectives carried out their investigation. It is understood the woman had been taking her child to school when they were hit.
Onlookers claimed the driver had been revving his engine at traffic lights before flying off down the road. He had travelled little over 200 yards when he collided with the pedestrians before slamming the car into the wall of a car dealership.
He hit the people with such force at least one of them flew 70ft over a 12ft wall and landed on the forecourt of a Jaguar Land Rover dealership between two cars for sale. Sales staff ran out the officer and discovered the horrific sight. A forensic tent has been put up in the dealership.
A tyre fitter who works a few hundred yards from the scene said: “I heard the Audi TT revving his engine at the red lights. Then he flew off down the road. I could see the driver at the wheel. I did not see the crash. But then all hell broke loose.”
The eyewitness added: “The entire front of the Audi is missing. The mother and child were pedestrians crossing the road.
“The driver was at the lights revving, He set off and 200 yards down the road he struck the two people on the pavement.”
A passerby added: ”I think the child was about four."
