Auburn Defeats North Carolina In Maui Invitational Semifinal

In a thrilling Maui Invitational semifinal matchup, No. 4 Auburn emerged victorious with an 85-72 win over No. 12 North Carolina. The game showcased an impressive performance by Johni Broome, who recorded 23 points and a career-best 19 rebounds for the Tigers.

Throughout the game, Auburn maintained control and never trailed, leading by as many as 19 points. Miles Kelly contributed 15 points, while Chad Baker-Mazara added 14 to secure the win for the Tigers, who improved their record to 6-0.

Broome's standout performance included 18 points in the first half, finishing with 9 of 18 from the field. He also showcased his all-around game with five assists and three blocks. Chaney Johnson chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Denver Jones and Tahaad Pettiford each scored 10 points.

On the other side, Seth Trimble led the Tar Heels with 17 points, but RJ Davis, the reigning ACC player of the year, was limited to a season-low 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

Despite a brief rally by North Carolina, Auburn closed the first half with a 7-2 run to take a 40-32 lead at halftime. The Tigers then opened the second half with a 12-2 run, extending their lead to 52-34.

Auburn's strong defensive effort was evident as they held a 15-6 advantage in points off turnovers, limiting North Carolina to a season-low scoring output.

With this victory, Auburn advances to the tournament championship game against Memphis, aiming to become the third SEC team to win the Maui Invitational. Meanwhile, North Carolina will face Michigan State in the battle for third place.
