Months on from the death of Aubrey Plaza‘s late husband Jeff Baena, a Los Angeles examiner has released new information about the director’s tragic passing.
Baena, 47, was found dead around 10:30am on January 3 (local time) at a home in Los Angeles.
In the newly released report, it was revealed that Plaza and Baena had recently split prior to the director’s death.

“According to the reported information, the decedent Jeffrey Baena is a 47-year-old Caucasian male,” the medical examiner wrote in the synopsis of an investigative summary report, per Us Weekly.
“He was experiencing recent marital difficulties and was separated from his wife since September 2024.”
A spokesperson for the actress told Us Weekly in a statement last month: “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
Baena and Plaza had been together for 14 years, initially meeting in 2011 before getting married in 2020 during COVID.
“A lot of things happened during COVID for me. Yes, we got married. Big deal,” Plaza said during a December 2021 appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We got a little bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up.”
She added, “We were in the lockdown. Things got a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day.”
According to Plaza, she hoped to “do something” special for their 10th anniversary.
“I created a very quick love altar in our yard. Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature,” the Parks and Recreation alum recalled at the time. “Then the man from Alhambra showed up in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase [to perform the ceremony]. … I can’t remember a lot of it, it was fuzzy. But I’m pretty sure it’s legal.”

Aubrey Plaza later paid tribute to her late husband by wearing a tie-dye top to the SNL50 event in his honour while presenting.
In the special, Plaza was seen introducing musical acts Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard performing “Nothing Compares 2 U”. It was the first time the Parks And Recreation actor had been seen in public since her husband Baena passed away from suicide on January 3.
During her cameo, Plaza wore a black blazer, black pants and a tie dyed t-shirt. Although her appearance was brief, fans quickly recognised the significance of the tie-dye shirt as a tribute to her husband.

Plaza was showered in praise by fans who commended her strength and bravery.
“Aubrey Plaza just quickly letting us know she’s doing okay at SNL50 has me sobbing,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user.
“So incredibly proud of this woman for being her truest self and keeping to whatever makes her feel comfortable,” said another.
“It can’t have been easy, but before any of the other moments of her incredible career, Aubrey Plaza was a SNL intern. Her return for this night was special for many reasons,” wrote another.
