Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel: a secluded Ibizan finca with the best pool on the island

It’s not hard to see why fashion heir Paola Fendi chose to have her lavish wedding reception at the sprawling fuschia bougainvillea-covered whitewashed finca that is Atzaró.

One of the White Isle’s first agroturismos, it has become somewhat of an Ibizan institution among those in the know. Celebs are drawn to its secluded location, hidden slightly inland, safely away from the island’s main haunts, and nestled amongst 32 acres of sweet-smelling orange groves and lush gardens — Rihanna and Shakira have both been spotted on its famous white daybeds.

Where is it?

Under half an hour from the airport, Atzaró sits calmly in the north-east of the White Isle, near Santa Eulalia.

It also boasts its own beach club 15 minutes’ drive away at Cala Nova, overlooking the sparkling turquoise water, as well as a chic farm-to-table countryside restaurant, Aubergine, further inland.

Style

(Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel)

Rustic, rural and peaceful, with bags of authentic finca charm. Atzaró is a 300-year old former working orange farm which has been in the Ibizan Guasch family for generations.

With original polished terracotta floors, exposed stone walls and beams and hand-carved wooden doors, the decor is traditional yet simple. Rooms feature pristine white sofas with large plump cushions, crisp linens, solid oak furniture and large ceramic pots, allowing the surrounding abundant nature to do all the talking.

There are eight outdoor pools, the jewel in the crown being the 43m-long freshwater column pool, which you’ve probably spotted somewhere on Instagram.

Which room?

Choose from a double, double superior, suite, suite superior and suite deluxe. All rooms and suites feature four-poster beds with cool white muslin curtains, and most also come with either their own private terrace, balcony or plunge pool to cool off in after a day of beach-hopping.

All also come with breakfast included, as well as unlimited access to the spa (more on which shortly), gym, daybeds and daily yoga and wellness classes.

The spa

(Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel)

Atzaró is perhaps best known for its wellness offering, whether you’re here for the whole detox to retox vibe or are on an absolute health kick. This year the hotel has introduced an outdoor sauna pod and jacuzzi deck built into the ground, which is in addition to the original spa, complete with hammam, finnish sauna and steam room, after which you’re encouraged to take a dip in the unheated pool.

On an uncharacteristically rainy day in May during our visit, after a sublime massage, we spent an afternoon repeating this circuit several times and slipped into a phenomenally deep sleep that night. Treatments are well worth the extra splurge, they’re renowned on the island for being among the best. Reflexology, reiki and facials are all on the menu, too.

Food & drink

(Atzaro’ s new menu draws on fresh produce grown on the land)

British chef James Adams, previously of Heckfield Place and The River Cafe, has curated a new dining concept at Atzaro’s restaurants for 2022, which draws on the fresh produce grown on the estate’s vegetable garden via bio-dynamic farming methods which take in the lunar phases.

La Veranda, the hotel’s restaurant has an outdoor terrace, where you can enjoy a healthy Mediterranean menu of salads, seafood and pasta dishes, while taking in the gorgeous smells of the jasmine, rosemary and lavendar growing around you and strutting resident peacocks. For something heartier go for the slow-cooked lamb leg with apricots and saffron potatoes or grilled beef fillet with harissa and chimichurri. For pudding, you won’t regret ordering the hotel’s signature Atzaró orange cake made with fresh clementines, saville and navel oranges grown in the farm and home-made marmalade. Breakfast, meanwhile, is to be savoured here, with plenty of a la carte options, in addition to a generous buffet with fresh fruit, juices and, of course, free-flowing cava - just stick to the one glass if you plan on joining the morning yoga class.

The Orange Tree (open July to September) is a more glamorous setting for al fresco dinners set in a courtyard beneath soaring palm trees and a pergola twinkling with lights, while Aubergine, around 15 minutes further into the heart of the island has a rustic, countryside vibe that’s popular with families.

The pool, obvs. And pretty much every bougainvillea-framed wall.
