Attorney General Garland Defends Special Counsel Choice Amid Scrutiny

Merrick Garland U.S. Attorney General Garland in Washington

Attorney General Merrick Garland recently defended his selection of Jack Smith as special counsel in the Justice Department's investigations into former President Donald Trump. Garland emphasized that Smith was chosen for his independence, nonpartisanship, and extensive career experience as a prosecutor, making him an ideal candidate for the role.

During a tense exchange with Chairman Jim Jordan, Garland reiterated his confidence in Smith's qualifications, stating, 'I appointed somebody who is not a political appointee. Somebody who was independent, nonpartisan with a record of career experience as a prosecutor. That seemed to me the perfect resume.'

When pressed by Jordan about whether Smith had requested the position, Garland responded with a light-hearted remark, indicating that the role of special counsel is not typically sought after. Despite persistent questioning from Jordan, Garland stood by his decision to appoint Smith, expressing no regrets about his choice.

Garland's unwavering support for Smith underscores the attorney general's commitment to conducting thorough and impartial investigations into matters of national significance. By selecting a seasoned prosecutor with a reputation for integrity, Garland aims to ensure that the Justice Department's inquiries are conducted with the highest level of professionalism and objectivity.
