Atlético Madrid vs Manchester United prediction and odds: Back Reds to stun Champions League rivals in Madrid

Check out our 21/10 Atlético Madrid vs Manchester United prediction below

Atlético Madrid and Manchester United meet for the first time in more than 30 years when they go head-to-head in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

It is an opportunity for one of these struggling giants to inject some much needed impetus into their season but Atléti have major issues on the domestic front and Ralf Rangnick's side have a golden opportunity to take a big European scalp and get themselves into the quarter-finals.

There isn't much between these two from a betting perspective although Manchester United are narrow favourites at 3/4 with Grosvenor Sport to progress.

However, Diego Simeone's side are 29/20 favourites to win the first leg in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday night. United are 21/10 chances to come away with a first-leg lead.

Atlético Madrid are the reigning La Liga champions but you would never know that by watching them this season. Los Colchoneros are languishing in fifth place, having lost seven matches this term — including four of their last seven games on all fronts.

Atléti managed to win just two of their Champions League group games although their section — which included Liverpool, Serie A leaders Milan and Portuguese tabel-toppers Porto — was a good deal tougher than United's.

Simeone's side have, in the past, been renowned for an ability to dig in and get results against the continent's best sides, but the current version of Atlético Madrid is a very different animal.

They score more goals but they concede far more than at any period in Simeone's 11-year reign. Atleti games have tended to be goal-fests this term, so much so that 11 of their last 15 matches in all competitions have gone over the 2.5 goal line, including four of the last five.

Luis Suarez, such a controversial figure in games between Liverpool and United during his time at Anfield, is likely to be relishing the opportunity to get one over his old enemy but the Uruguayan's weekend strike against Osasuna was just his third goal since November 7.

Now 35, Suarez doesn't have anything like the mobility he did in his Anfield days while fellow striker Joao Felix, another scorer at the weekend, has started just three of Atléti's last 15 La Liga games.

Atlético Madrid vs Manchester United prediction

Atlético Madrid gained a confidence-boosting win at the weekend but their form this year has been well below the levels expected from the champions and United, buoyed by Sunday's crucial win at Leeds, will get chances in Madrid.

Don't expect Atléti to control this game; they had just 38 per cent possession in Osasuna at the weekend, and allowed the league's bottom side, Levante, 46 per cent possession in midweek, a game the hosts lost 1-0.

United are probably going to have a much bigger stake in this game than many expect and, if they can make the most of their opportunities, they could easily put this tie to bed before the Old Trafford leg.

At the prices, United make a good deal of appeal so get in the Reds at a shade over 2/1 with Grosvenor Sport.
