Here’s Sid Lowe’s match report
Full time: Atletico Madrid 3-1 Real Madrid
A rare but fully deserved derby win for Atletico. They were smarter and more ruthless than Real, who had a bad night at the office. Alvaro Morata (twice) and Antoine Griezmann scored similar headers, all from left-wing crosses. Toni Kroos gave Real a sniff when he made it 2-1 just before half-time, but Morata’s goal in the first minute of the second half was a decisive blow.
90+5 min Bellingham is booked for a really poor challenge on Correa. It wasn’t far away from being a red-card offence.
Updated
90+3 min Memphis almost ends the game in style, whistling a drive just wide from 25 yards.
90+1 min Six minutes of added time.
90 min It’s not going to happen for Real. They’ve been well short of their best tonight.
86 min: Another Atletico substitution Or maybe not: Javi Galan has come on for Antoine Griezmann, who has been quite superb. The referee appears to have just booked the fella holding the substitution board.
Scratch that, it’s Samuel Lino who is coming off.
Updated
85 min: Atletico substitution Angel Correa replaces Jose Maria Gimenez, so Griezmann will drop into midfield and Witsel into defence.
84 min Real continue to press, though it’s all a little desperate and unconvincing.
82 min: Atletico substitution Memphis Depay replaces Alvaro Morata, whose two goals have put Atletico on the brink of a precious victory,
81 min Bellingham wins a corner off Savic after a nice turn. A goal now would make things interesting, though in truth it doesn’t look likely. The corner is headed away by Savic.
78 min Brahim Diaz scoots into the area and hits a rising drive from a tight angle that is pushed over by Oblak. A comfortable enough save.
77 min Griezmann’s inswinging corner is palmed away by the backpedalling Kepa.
76 min A rare Atletico attack. The excellent Lino cuts inside and hits a shot that deflects behind for a corner.
75 min Another effort from outside the area, this time a floater from Mendy. Goalkick to Atletico.
72 min Now Valverde shoots wide from distance. Real are getting a bit desperate.
70 min: Real substitution Brahim Diaz comes on for Toni Kroos.
70 min Rudiger marches forward and has a dig from 30 yards. It flashes just wide, though I suspect Oblak had it covered.
67 min Mendy is booked for a lunge at Llorente.
66 min Real are building some pressure for the first time in the second half.
65 min: Atletico substitution Cesar Azpilicueta is on for Nahuel Molina at right-back.
64 min: Double chance for Real! Valverde’s cross is touched off by Joselu to Rodrygo, whose snap volley is well blocked. The ball rebounds to Tchouameni, who leathers a superb shot just wide from 25 yards.
Updated
62 min It’s been a chastening derby debut for Jude Bellingham, who was fouled in the lead-up to Atletico’s first goal and has had no joy in the final third.
59 min Griezmann, who has been terrific, accepts a return pass from Llorente and pings a shot from 20 yards that is blocked by Tchouameni.
57 min: Triple substitution for Real Ferland Mendy, Nacho and Aurelien Tchouameni replace Fran Garcia, Eduardo Camavinga and Lucas Vazquez.
56 min Vazquez’s cross is too high for Joselu. Real have been wretched since half-time.
54 min: Hermoso hits the bar! Griezmann wins and then takes a corner on the left. It’s swung deep towards Hermoso, whose header back across goal hits the top of the crossbar. Kepa might have had it covered.
Updated
51 min Real are yet to recover from the shock of the third goal and have created nothing since half-time. If they’re not careful Atletico will put them away.
Updated
48 min It would be fair to say David Alaba has not had a great night. Morata lost him very easily for both goals.
All three goals have come down Atletico’s left. Griezmann cushioned a clever pass out to Saul, who curled a first-time cross towards the far post. Morata pulled away from Alaba, who had no idea where he was, and leapt to guide a header to the left of Kepa.

Atletico Axel Witsel for Koke
Real Joselu for Luka Modric

Half time: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid
A strange half of football. Atletico were superb for 35 minutes; they exposed Real in wide areas and went 2-0 up through accomplished headers from Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann. Then Toni Kroos pulled one back, totally against the run of play, and the mood changed completely. Atletico were hanging on for the rest of the half and Eduardo Camavinga had a goal disallowed just before the break.
45+2 min Four minutes of added time.
45+1 min Gimenez is booked for wiping up Rodrygo, who was about to leave him for dust on the left.
Updated
Camavinga has a goal disallowed! A corner was half cleared to Bellingham, who teased a cross towards the far post. Alaba forced it onto the post and Camavinga turned it into an open net, but the flag went up against Rudiger. He didn’t touch the ball but he did challenge for it, and VAR are happy with the on-field decision. Modric is booked for protesting.
Updated
40 min Loads of Real pressure now. Bellingham’s cross-shot is kicked away by Gimenez (I think), but Atletico can’t get out.
40 min Kroos cracks a 25-yard shot that is held to his right by Oblak.
38 min The difference a goal makes. Real, who were almost hanging on to a 2-0 deficit, now have a spring in their step.
Real are back in it thanks to an excellent goal from Toni Kroos. Valverde’s fierce cross was headed away to him on the edge of the area. He dummied to shoot with his left foot, cut inside Llorente – whose challenge was a bit half-arsed – and drilled a precise right-footed shot that beat Oblak at the near post.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid (Kroos 35)
Now then.
Updated
33 min Rodrygo goes over in the area but the referee isn’t interested.
31 min: Another chance for Atletico! Llorente gets away down the right and cuts the ball back to Saul, whose first-time shot is beaten away by Kepa, plunging to his right. That’s a pretty good save.
30 min Camavinga’s long-range shot takes a deflection and spins onto the roof of the net. Alaba’s near-post corner is headed towards goal by Valverde and comfortably saved by Oblak.
28 min Atletico are killing Real on the wings. Molina gets round the back on the right, but his low cross towards Morata is intercepted.
25 min Lots of slow possession for Real Madrid. They’re really struggling to create chances.
22 min Modric, on the edge of the area, wallops a bouncing ball over the bar.
20 min At the other end, Rodrygo’s tame shot goes well wide.
20 min Llorente’s stinging shot is desperately blocked by Alaba. Real are all over the show.
The impressive Lino was again involved. He cut inside and then played a reverse pass to Saul on the left wing. He stood up a nice cross on the turn, and the backpedalling Griezmann strained his neck muscles to steer a header into the far corner. That’s an excellent finish.
GOAL! Atletico 2-0 Real (Griezmann 18)
Real Madrid have come from behind to win three games this season. But this will take a deal of winning.
Updated
16 min Koke makes an excellent tackle on Bellingham, who was moving towards the penalty area with menace.
16 min Camavinga is cynically tripped 25 yards from goal by Hermoso. Alaba’s free-kick hits the wall and spins behind for a corner.
14 min Real are dominating possession, as you’d expect, but for now Atletico look very comfortable.
12 min “There’s danger in scoring too early, especially against a team like Real Madrid,” writes Kári Tulinius. “Actually, just scoring against Real Madrid is dangerous in and of itself, as they tend to take it as an affront. But if there’s any manager who prepares obsessively for defending a lead for 90 minutes, it’s El Cholo.”
11 min Kroos’s deflected long-range shot is comfortably held by Oblak.
10 min Griezmann’s outswinging corner is just too high for Gimenez in the six-yard box. Koke keeps the ball alive and heads it back towards Gimenez, who heads wide on the half-turn. It wasn’t much of a chance.
9 min At the other end, Llorente’s deflected cross loops onto the roof of the net. They are causing Real problems in wide areas.
8 min A long spell of possession for Real. Eventually Fran Garcia overhits a cross that goes behind for a goalkick.
That’s a very nice goal. It was made by the left wing-back Samuel Lino, who cut inside Fede Valverde and curled a wicked inswinging cross with his right foot. Morata pulled away from Alaba and glanced an accomplished header past Kepa.
GOAL! Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (Morata 4)
Alvaro Morata scores against his old club!
3 min Bellingham seems to be fouled on the edge of the D but the referee isn’t interested. Atletico break, and then…

2 min Molina wins the first corner down the right. Griezmann’s inswinger is cleared at the near post.
2 min Jude Bellingham has started up front alongside Rodrygo; it’ll be fascinating to see how he performs.
1 min Peep peep! Real kick off from left to right as we watch.
Before the game, there is a minute’s silence in honour of Pepe Domingo Castano.

Preamble
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the first Madrid derby of the season. Real have been perfect so far, with five wins out of five in La Liga, although they had to come from behind in three of those games. Jude Bellingham has been in absurd form, with five goals in the league and an injury-time winner against Union Berlin in the Champions League.
Atletico haven’t been quite so successful: they won 7-0 at Valladolid but lost their next game 3-0 at Valencia. In midweek they were denied a Champions League by a fine equaliser from the Lazio keeper Ivan Provedel.
Diego Simeone’s side haven’t played at home since beating Granada in mid-August; the matchn against Sevilla in early September was postponed because of an “exceptional” forecast for heavy rain. There should be a helluvan atmosphere tonight.
Kick off 8pm BST, 9pm in Madrid.
