Atletico Madrid have filled the void left by Kieran Trippier's departure by signing 32-year-old Daniel Wass from Valencia.
The England international returned to the Premier League signing for relegation-threatened Newcastle United as their first addition under their new ownership.
But Atleti have moved to replace him with Wass, who has signed a two-year deal in the Spanish capital after a €2.7m (£2.2m) fee plus add-ons was agreed.
Diego Simeone was limited in his efforts to make an addition to the full-back department as a result of their limited budget and wage cap.
The 32-year-old could be in line to start against United in the first leg of their Champions League knockout game next month.

The Dane offers versatility for Atleti with his capability of playing in defence as well as midfield, but ultimately brings experience as he will provide depth beyond Sime Vrsaljko.
In their La Liga title defence, Atleti sit 14 points off leaders and city rivals Real Madrid but they dramatically booked their place in the next stage of the Champions League after beating FC Porto on the final matchday to secure second place in their group.
