Atletico Madrid dealt major fitness boost after 3-0 win before Manchester United fixture

Atletico Madrid have been dealt a major injury boost ahead of next week's Champions League last 16 first leg against Manchester United as Antoine Griezmann has returned to first-team training.

He has faced a race against time to get fit for first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday after he picked up a muscle injury against Real Madrid in December.

The French international suffered a recurrence of the problem in the Copa del Rey win over CF Rayo Majadahonda, but is close to a recovery after he was deemed fit enough for the bench in Atleti's 3-0 win at Osasuna.

It's a welcome boost for the Spanish champions with their top goalscorer in this season's European competition returning to the fold for their first knockout clash with United.

He has scored four goals in five appearances, including a brace against Liverpool, but missed the reverse leg at Anfield after being shown a red card for a high-foot on Roberto Firmino.

But he returned to training this week, after more than a month out, and Diego Simeone's will be monitoring his fitness after their clash with Osasuna, prior to the visit of Ralf Rangnick's side.

Atleti ran out convincing winners in their La Liga clash on Saturday, with Joao Felix, Luis Suarez and Angel Correa scoring in a 3-0 triumph.
