Three Atlanta police officers were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after an altercation that left a suspect dead on Saturday evening. The incident occurred when officers responded to a report of an armed man in a commercial area on Fairbanks Street and encountered a man with a handgun and a knife on Desoto Avenue, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.
During the encounter, a struggle ensued, resulting in gunfire that injured three officers and led to the death of the armed individual. The deceased man has not been identified by the police department, and authorities do not believe anyone else was involved in the incident.
The three injured officers were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, with one officer shot in the shoulder, another in the leg, and the third sustaining a grazing wound. Two of the officers were scheduled for surgery, as confirmed by Chief Schierbaum.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation into the shooting, Mayor Andre Dickens stated. He also mentioned that the injured officers were alert, conscious, and breathing when he visited them at the hospital.
Separate Nightclub Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Four Injured
In a separate incident later in Atlanta, two people were killed and four others were wounded in a nightclub shooting at Elleven45 Lounge in the Buckhead neighborhood. The shooting occurred following a fight, as reported by WSB-TV.
Police responded to the scene around 2:30 a.m. and are currently searching for a suspect. The names of those killed or wounded have not been released, but all individuals involved were between the ages of 20 and 30. The victims included one man and one woman who were fatally shot.
The two injured men and two injured women were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive, according to Atlanta police homicide commander Lt. Andrew Smith.
