Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte has expressed concerns over the treatment of player Nico Williams amid speculation about his future. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has been criticized for failing to protect Williams from persistent questions regarding a potential move to Barcelona, with sources indicating interest from the Catalan club.

Williams, 21, has faced a barrage of inquiries during his time at the European Championship with Spain, regarding his intentions to stay at Athletic or potentially join Barcelona. Despite having a release clause of approximately €58 million, Barcelona's president Joan Laporta has suggested the club has the financial means to secure Williams.

Barça's focus on signing a midfielder and a left winger this summer has placed Williams on their radar for the latter position. However, Uriarte emphasized the importance of respecting players' commitments to their current clubs and criticized the public pressure placed on Williams to consider a move.

Having recently extended his contract with Athletic until 2027, Williams' impressive performances for both club and country have attracted attention. He played a key role in Athletic's Copa del Rey triumph and has been instrumental in Spain's Euro 2024 campaign, culminating in a final against England.

Uriarte reassured that Athletic is well-equipped to retain their top talents, citing contract renewals for other key players like Unai Simón and Dani Vivian. He emphasized the club's ambition and ability to provide a competitive environment for players to thrive.

Williams, who has been with Athletic since a young age and plays alongside his brother Iñaki Williams, has remained focused on the Euros and declined to discuss his future beyond the tournament. With a strong bond to Athletic and a growing reputation in the football world, Williams' loyalty and dedication to his current club are evident.
