Atalanta boss confirms Teun Koopmeiners transfer stance amid Liverpool links

Liverpool may have been dealt a blow in their reported pursuit of Teun Koopmeiners after Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini stated the midfielder will be staying put.

The Reds were credited with an interest in the 24-year-old earlier this month as they look to potentially strengthen their squad. Cody Gakpo remains the only new arrival to Liverpool’s squad so far during the January transfer window.

Reports in i News last week claimed that Liverpool have watched Koopmeiners in action with a view to a potential move in the future. It’s been reported by articles in Italy that the 23-year-old is valued by Atalanta at around £35million.

Atalanta boss Gasperini has been quoted providing an update on the future of Koopmeiners to Italian news outlet Tutto Atalanta, with the news coming as a blow to any club who may have been planning on making a swoop for the midfielder.

"Koopmeiners won't move in January,” Gasperini is quoted saying.

Atalanta signed Koopmeiners from AZ Alkmaar in 2021 for a reported fee in the region of €12m. Liverpool were linked with a move for the player back then, but he instead opted to move to Italy rather than Merseyside.

Koopmeiners recently impressed for Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He played in all five of his country’s fixtures in the tournament, providing one assist in their quarter-final defeat to Argentina.
