The Australian embassy in Seoul says it has been notified of the death of an Australian in a crowd crush in the South Korean capital city that left more than 153 people dead.
The Department of Foreign Affairs says consular officers are providing assistance to the individual's family in Australia.
Consular officials are also assisting a number of other Australians who were present at the event.
An Australian man in Seoul has told the ABC that a friend of his died in the crush. He said another Australian is in intensive care and another dual citizen is in a stable condition.
The ABC has not been able to independently verify those reports of injuries.
Choi Sung-beom, head of the Yongsan Fire Station, told a briefing at the scene that 82 people were injured, 19 of them seriously. The deaths included 22 foreigners, he said.
Officials said the death toll could continue to rise, with witnesses describing the scene as "like a war".
It's believed people were crushed to death after a large crowd began pushing forward in a narrow alley near Hamilton Hotel, a major party spot in Seoul.
The incident occurred around 10:20pm local time in the popular leisure district of Itaewon.
Local media said about 100,000 people flocked to Itaewon's streets to celebrate Halloween, the biggest gathering since the start of the pandemic and the first Halloween event in three years.
