At home with Batman - the tram cat with thousands of fans who has charmed Metrolink passengers

If you have ever caught a tram in Chorlton, this four-legged legend will need no introduction.

Batman, or as he's more commonly known, 'Chorlton tram cat', has become something of a celebrity in the south Manchester suburb, thanks to his daily appearances at the Metrolink stop.

The black and white tuxedo moggy, so called because his distinct markings give him a resemblance to the Caped Crusader, spends his days greeting passengers, brazenly parading about on the tracks and even climbing onto the laps of passengers he takes a particular liking to.

His affection for passengers has won him an army of fans.

He's now become so popular that he has his own Facebook page, while social media is flooded with pictures documenting his adventures.

And although some passengers assume that Batman lives at the tram stop, he actually has a loving home nearby that he returns to every night.

When he's not busy charming his way into the hearts of commuters, he can be found curled up on the lap of his owner Nicci Cuff, alongside her son Milo, 12, and fellow cats Kaboom, Ziggy Binks and Perdu.

Nicci adopted Batman just over two years ago, after he walked into her house as a stray and refused to leave.

His adventures on the Metrolink almost never happened, as he very nearly ended up having an entirely different home.

Having three other rescue cats already, Nicci initially planned to re-home Batman, but in the end couldn't bear to let him leave.

Nicci explains: "He was so friendly that I couldn't say no to him.

"I found him a home, and the night before he was due to go, he was sitting on my knee and I was just crying.

"I couldn't let him go. I think he was meant to stay."

Not long after he moved in, Nicci started noticing that her pet was getting a huge amount of attention on social media, thanks to his regular appearances at the tram stop.

He started leaving the house early, in time to catch morning commuters during rush hour, returning home for breakfast and then heading back out to the stop.

Batman's two worlds eventually collided the day Nicci herself caught a tram home.

She said: "The first time I saw him myself at the tram stop, I don't know who was more surprised, but he was really pleased to see me, we both ran up to each other.

"Then he walked home with me. I had to stop at the petrol station on the way and he just came in with me."

Batman has recently extended his kingdom and now also likes to frequent the car park at  Morrisons.

He's also ended up further afield on two occasions, after well meaning strangers mistook him for a stray and dropped him off at the vets.

His popularity is now so great that Nicci has bowed to popular demand and made him his own Facebook page - Batman AKA Tram Cat.

In less than a week, he has accrued more than a thousand followers.

She added: "People had been saying he should have his own Facebook page and asked why he didn't, and my answer was 'because he is a cat.'

"But he got more than 1,000 fans in three days, it's crazy."

Nicci understands completely why Chorlton has taken her cat to their hearts.

She added: "He's hilarious, he just loves everyone and he's been like that since the beginning. He's a very sweet cat

"He's so friendly and so sweet - but he's got a rock star energy too.

"I think he has got something quite healing about him. People get so much joy from seeing him. So many people get how brilliant he is."
