British superstar Adele seemed to be the only person in the room at the Brit Awards 2022 who was surprised when she took out three of the four awards she was nominated for, including the first award of the night, Song of the Year, for Easy on Me.
She issued her thanks for the award, expressing how grateful she was to be recognised in her home country.
"I always love coming back home," she said.
"The Brits are such a big part of my career from way back when, when I was a little foetus."
Adele was back on stage to sing I Drink Wine in a seated performance, before returning to the stage in her third outfit of the night to accept the award for Artist of the Year.
Again, she was the only person who was surprised.
"I actually really wasn't expecting this one at all," she said, acknowledging the other artists who were nominated including Ed Sheeran, and Little Simz.
"England, the UK, we have so many incredible new young artists coming up.
"And never lose sight of why you are who you are.
"The reason people are into you is because of something you have in you.
"Don't ever let go of that ever.
"I do. I do," she said to cheers from the audience.
Like the ARIAs, the Brits have done away with gendered categories, with one of the hosts joking that everyone thought that was great except the male artists who were now up against Adele.
Potentially a truism as Adele also won Album of the Year for 30, presented to her by superstar entertainer, Idris Elba.
Adele said she was dedicating the album to her son and Simon, his father.
The awards began with a performance from another big gun, Ed Sheeran, who incorporated fire and acrobatics in his performance of Bad Habits.
It ended with a promise he'd return to the stage, which he did to perform the Joker and the Queen, and to accept the honour of Songwriter of the Year.
Sam Fender won for best Rock/Alternative Act.
Other winners included Olivia Rodrigo who won International Song of the Year with Good 4 U.
She beat out Australian artist The Kid LAROI and Canadian Justin Bieber who were nominated for Stay.
Rodrigo was one of many artists who glittered on the Red Carpet.
