Occupying an area of 99,000 square meters within Jeddah-based King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), Al-Haramain (two holy mosques) train station stands as the world's largest terminal connected to an airport, an official report said according to the Saudi Press Agency on Sunday.
The airport's station is part of the terminal stations of Al-Haramain express project which also includes Makkah, Al-Madinah, Jeddah and Rabigh King Abdullah Economic City.
Accordingly, KAIA is the Middle East's only airport connected to a railway station.
The airport terminal accommodates six trains at a time, able to operate a journey every ten minutes during peak hours, said the report.
The project is designed to meet the increasing numbers of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims coming from inside and outside the Kingdom and ease pressure on Makkah, Jeddah and Madina highways.
As many as 40 male and female Saudi highly-qualified personnel run the station at one shift, the report said, adding that the project complies with the requirements of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
