An Arizona State University student allegedly stabbed her peer twice in a classroom in Glendale on Sept. 19 in a seemingly random attack. Maricopa County authorities charged the 19-year-old student with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and disorderly conduct with a weapon in connection with the attack against another student.
The victim's neighbors created a GoFundMe page to support her recovery, stating that she was stabbed several times but is making progress. Witnesses, including a brave student named Matthew McCormick, intervened to stop the attack, potentially saving the victim's life.
Approximately 13 witnesses, including a professor, recounted the incident to police, describing the stabbing as unprovoked. Detectives found a note in the suspect's backpack referencing an impending act of violence. The suspect admitted to planning the attack since the night prior and expressed a desire to harm someone in class that day.
The suspect targeted the victim because she was perceived as an easier target than another individual. Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, and the victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect is currently detained on multiple charges and a significant bond.
ASU Police are actively investigating the incident and providing counseling support to the campus community. The university expressed deep sadness over the event, emphasizing the close-knit nature of the campus and the availability of resources for those affected.
