An Arizona State University student has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and disorderly conduct following an incident in a Glendale classroom on Sept. 19. The accused, a 19-year-old student named Kaci Lenise-Charlie Sloan, allegedly stabbed her peer, Mara Daffron, twice in what appears to be a random attack.
Witnesses, including student Matthew McCormick, described the harrowing event. McCormick intervened to stop the attack, potentially saving Daffron's life. Approximately 13 witnesses, including a professor, recounted the incident to police, stating that the stabbing occurred without provocation or any words spoken.
Police reports indicate that Sloan had premeditated the attack, as evidenced by a handwritten note found in her backpack referencing an impending act. Sloan admitted to authorities that she came to class with the intention to harm someone and had been planning the attack since the night prior.
Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, detaining Sloan and transporting Daffron to a nearby hospital for treatment. The ASU community expressed deep sadness over the incident, emphasizing the campus's close-knit nature and offering counseling support to all affected individuals.
Sloan is currently held on a $250,000 cash-only bond and faces multiple charges related to the attack. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday in Maricopa County as the investigation continues.
