Aston Villa Player Ratings (4-2-3-1)
Robbin Olsen – 6.5
Did not have much to do during the match but pulled off an important save to thwart Danny Ings towards the end.
Matty Cash – 6
The Polish international put in a steady performance at right back and kept Paqueta quiet for large parts of the match (despite the Brazilian’s goal).
Ezri Konsa – 6
Managed to regain a sense of control after West Ham’s goal and was solid alongside Tyrone Mings.
Tyrone Mings – 6
The Englishman showed signs of rust which is understandable given his lengthy-absence but has now played consecutive 90 minutes for the first time since his injury,
Ian Maatsen – 6.5
Was more of an attacking threat in the second-half but was caught out a few times on the counter attack.
Youri Tielemans – 6
The Belgian appeared to be playing in a more advance role in the first half but dropped back in the second and made much more of an impact
Boubacar Kamara – 6
Didn’t really get into the match but provided a sense of solidity in midfield.
Leon Bailey – 5.5
The Jamaican was not a huge threat for the Villains and put in a quiet display for his standards.
Ross Barkley – 4
The Englishman was taken off after 20 minutes through injury, being replaced by Amadou Onana.
Morgan Rogers – 7
An unusually quiet evening for Rogers during large spells of the match but stepped up at the important moment to score the winner.
Ollie Watkins – 6
The England international posed very little threat throughout the match but played a huge part with the assist for Rogers’ strike.
Manager: Unai Emery – 7
Dropping Tielemans back in the second-half was the correct move for the Aston Villa manager and will be hoping to go on a strong cup run.

West Ham Player Ratings (4-2-3-1)
Lukasz Fabianski – 5
Didn’t face many attempts from Aston Villa but spilled the all-important strike to allow Amadou Onana the chance to equalise.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6
An underwhelming performance for the former Manchester United player as he failed to offer much going forward and Aston Villa’s winner came down his side.
Konstantinos Mavropanos – 6.5
Managed to keep Ollie Watkins quiet for almost the entirety of the match and was unfortunate to be on the losing side.
Max Kilman – 6.5
Similar to his centre back partner, Kilman did well against the Aston Villa front line and managed to win all of his headers.
Oliver Scarles – 7.5
The teenager was deemed man of the match by Lee Dixon on ITV and put in a strong display on his first start for the West Ham first team.
Edson Alvarez – 5
The Mexican failed to protect his back four being dribbled past three times and failed to offer anything on the attacking front.
Tomas Soucek – 6
Soucek created some chances for the Hammers and was a clear presence in midfield but was not his usual threat from set-pieces.
Mohammed Kudus – 6
In his typical fashion Kudus showed sparks and moments of silky skill but was fairly ineffective going forward.
Lucas Paqueta – 6.5
Opened the scoring with a superbly calm finish but fizzled out of the match and could have been stronger to stop Villa’s equaliser.
Crysencio Summerville – 6
Contributed with an assist but was substituted at half-time with what looked like a hamstring injury.
Niclas Fullkrug – 4
Was forced off with a hamstring injury in the opening 15 minutes and adds to the German’s disappointing start at West Ham.
Manager: Graham Potter – 6
Very hard to judge the former Chelsea manager as this was his first match in charge, but he will see some signs to work with in East London.
Substitutes
Danny Ings – 4
Contributed next to nothing despite coming on in the opening 15 minutes.
Vladimir Coufal – 6
Aaron Cresswell – 5
Carlos Soler – 4
