Aston Villa suffer shock FA Cup exit to former Leeds United boss' side ahead of Whites visit

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch will be hoping to replicate the job that Steve Evans pulled off at Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon - with the former Whites boss masterminding a 2-1 win over Unai Emery at Villa Park.

Villa looked to be cruising to victory against the League Two minnows when Morgan Sanson's strike after half-an-hour put the Premier League outfit in the lead at a canter. 79 per cent possession, no cards and 17 shots to Stevenage's six had Villa in the driving seat, merely needing to see the game out to advance to the next round.

But the visitors had other ideas. Comical playing out from the back by Leander Dendocker saw Dean Campbell steal a march on the Belgian, who hauled him down for a penalty and a red card. That was successful tucked away by Jamie Reid, and with little over two minutes left, the away side chose to go again. Miraculously, nobody picked Campbell up from a short corner and the Scot drove into the box, rifling a shot past a bewildered Robin Olsen to leave Villa Park absolutely stunned.

Of course, Evans was Leeds boss for the best part of six months - though his 14 wins in just 38 games saw him sacked at the end of the 2015-16 season under the madness that was Massimo Cellino.

He took the club from 18th to 13th after a dreadful start to the season by Uwe Rosler, and a memorable cup run followed before defeat to Watford. However, with the Whites playing at Villa in a crunch Premier League clash on Friday evening, they will be hoping to pull off a likeminded performance and lift themselves a potential five clear of the relegation zone.
