Aston Villa 'lead race' to sign £60million Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Aston Villa are prepared to break the bank in their pursuit to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to The Times. The report suggests Steven Gerrard’s men are now the frontrunners to sign Phillips - who has not featured for Leeds since the 2-2 draw against Brentford back in December.

Rumours linking the England midfielder with a move away have been rife all season and West Ham chiefs claim to have had a £50million bid rejected in January. Phillips was on the bench for the dramatic 3-2 comeback win against Wolves on Friday and getting him back in action is seen as a priority if the Whites are to secure Premier League survival.

Despite being a boyhood Leeds fan, it appears unlikely that the 26-year-old would stay at Elland Road if the club were relegated - especially as he harbours ambitions to play at the Qatar World Cup in eight months' time. Villa would reportedly stump up £60million and offer Phillips a huge pay packet to prise him away from his hometown club. They see the Three Lions star as the ideal player to propel them towards the European places next season, with Gerrard keen to bolster his midfield ranks.

The Midlands club have emerged as the favourites for his signature but must continue to stave off interest from mega-rich Newcastle and West Ham.
