Aston Villa fans come up with Matt Targett theory as defender continues to impress at Newcastle

On-loan Aston Villa fullback, Matt Targett, is set to make his move to Newcastle permanent when the transfer window opens in the summer. The 26-year-old joined the Magpies on the final day of the January window, and is now on course to remain in the North East after his loan expires.

Targett has made 11 appearances for Newcastle this season, and has been an almost ever-present at left back since arriving at the club, only missing the 1-0 victory over parent club Aston Villa due to loan rules. Newcastle have only lost three of the 11 games Targett has played, and his contribution to Newcastle's back line has not gone unnoticed, with many fans calling for the reported £15million deal to be secured when the window opens.

Supporters of his parent club, Aston Villa, have also noticed Targett's affinity to Newcastle, highlighted by his posts on social media. They believe recent posts show how much he is enjoying life playing for Newcastle, with one fan saying: "Targett seems much happier playing in black and white," with another commenting: "The mood up North is undoubtedly amazing at the moment because they're flying."

Targett's most recent post came after Newcastle's 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday, and was captioned: "Ei ei ei o, up the Premier League we go…"

Other Villa supporters made comments about Targett's performances in claret and blue: "Targett was superb when there was no crowd and he has missed Jack Grealish helping him this season so looked poor again."

"Targett is a good player, wish he’d stay but if he can't back himself to challenge Digne then that's probably not a mentality Villa need," another said.

Targett's replacement at Villa, Lucas Digne, has been blighted by injury and illness since arriving at Villa Park, with Ashley Young often being used as cover.
