Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard refuses to discuss previous links to Newcastle United manager job

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has refused to be drawn into speaking about speculation that linked him to the Newcastle United job earlier this season.

Gerrard was reportedly among the names in the running to replace Steve Bruce following his departure from St. James’ Park back in October.

At the time, Gerrard decided it was best for his managerial career to remain at Rangers, where he helped them win their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years last season.

When he was asked by BT Sport earlier in the season about a potential switch to the Magpies, Gerrard moved quickly to distance himself from the job.

He said: “Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don't ask me silly questions then.”

However, less than a month after giving that response to the Newcastle job, Gerrard left Ibrox to take up the vacant managerial role left by Dean Smith.

He has enjoyed a good start to life in the West Midlands, winning five and drawing two of his opening 11 Premier League matches in charge.

Gerrard has also been able to attract the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne to Villa Park, demonstrating the pull he has when attempting to bring in new players.

Ahead of Newcastle’s meeting with Gerrard’s Villa side this weekend, he was asked whether he ever considered taking up the job at the Magpies, to which he refused to be drawn into answering.

He said: “Well, I don't think that question is very important, is it, because I'm sitting here as the Aston Villa manager and Eddie Howe is doing a fantastic job at Newcastle so I'm not going to give you any headlines about that, sorry.”
