Assault charges against Andrew O'Keefe related to alleged choking incident withdrawn in court

A series of charges against former TV host Andrew O'Keefe relating to an alleged domestic violence incident at his home last year has been withdrawn.

Mr O'Keefe faced six charges after he allegedly punched, kicked and choked a 38-year-old woman in his Sydney apartment in January 2022, however, they were dismissed on day one of his hearing.

He previously pleaded not guilty, claiming he had acted in self-defence.

Outside the Downing Centre Local Court, Mr O'Keefe said that he was "not surprised, but relieved" the charges had been dropped.

The 51-year-old remains on trial for multiple charges related to a separate alleged domestic violence incident in September 2021, as well as one charge of contravening an apprehended violence order and another of resisting a police officer.

Police body cam footage played before the court shows an officer in conversation with the complainant of that incident.

"I can see you've got some stuff on your arm, did he do that?" the officer asks, referring to scratches on the woman's arms.

"Yep," the distressed woman replies.

In another body cam video, Mr O'Keefe said he would not make any comments until he spoke to a lawyer.

The officer in evidence on Monday said the female complainant told her that Mr O'Keefe had "been on a bender" that night and had not slept.

The court was closed on Monday as the complainant took the stand.

About halfway through her evidence she left the courtroom in tears and re-entered shortly afterwards.

Mr O'Keefe, a former ambassador for domestic violence charity White Ribbon, was granted bail in May last year on the condition he attend a rehabilitation centre to address cocaine, ice and cannabis addictions.

The judge said he believed rehab would help him address his "significant descent into an erratic and chaotic lifestyle".

In November he was charged with breaching bail conditions after failing a drug test, but a magistrate ruled he should be allowed to remain in the community.

The trial before Magistrate Alison Viney continues.
