ASOS shoppers praise retailer for featuring model with scoliosis scar

An ASOS photoshoot has earned plenty of praise from shoppers, who were pleased to see the online retail giant feature a model with a visible scoliosis scar.

The model can be seen sporting a scoop-necked 'Vans Flying V bralette in black and beige', a stylish, summer-ready crop top that has now been reduced from £30 to £18 on the ASOS site.

Her scar, which runs down her spine, is clearly visible in the pic, sparking widespread approval from those keen to see greater diversity in the modelling industry.

Scoliosis is a condition of varying severity, where a person's spine curves or twists to the side in such a way that can result in back pain and breathing issues.

Those with severe curvature may undergo a type of surgery known as spinal fusion surgery (SFS), a procedure whereby two or more of the patient's vertebrae are fused into one solid bone.

This operation is intended to help straighten the spine, preventing any further curvature, as per Medical News Today, and patients will often be left with scarring.

Many ASOS shoppers have been pleased to see this sort of powerful representation, and some have even been inspired to buy the crop top for the sole purpose of proudly displaying their own scars.

One social media user who'd undergone the same procedure tweeted: "Amazing ASOS - a model showing what looks to be her beautiful scoliosis surgery scar! I'm almost tempted to buy the top just to show off mine too!"

Sharing the snap on Twitter, another wrote: "How cool is this?! Scoliosis (spinal fusion) surgery scar representation on ASOS."

A third approved: "Stumbled across an ASOS model proudly showing scoliosis scar [...]. Amazing to see and so important to be showing all kinds of bodies."

Approximately four out of every 100 people have scoliosis, according to Scoliosis SOS Clinic, and women are more likely to be affected than men.

One famous person with scoliosis is Princess Eugenie, who chose to display her scar with pride during her 2018 wedding to Jack Brooksbank.

Opening up about her decision with People, Eugenie explained: "I had always wanted a low back—part of it was showing my scar, and I believe scars tell a story about your past and your future, and it's a way of getting rid of a taboo."
