ASOS fans are just discovering 'mind-blowing' meaning behind letters in store name

For those of us who are partial to a bit of online shopping, it doesn't get much better than ASOS.

The online shopping site is one of the biggest there is, with thousands of customers making purchases everyday. Whether you need clothes, makeup, shoes or accessories, a quick scan on ASOS often means you're able to find it in a matter of minutes.

But the name of the store is a mystery for some, as the four letters may seem as though they're related to the store's founder. But the name actually originates from something completely different, as many people are just now finding out.

Birmingham Live reports that ASOS actually stands for As Seen On Screen - nothing to do with who invented the site or anything else sentimental.

The company was founded in 1999 where it sold unbranded clothing to stars from TV shows with the idea that ordinary people could end up wearing the clothes they'd seen on TV.

From there, people began referring to the company as As Seen On Screen and in 2000, that was what they officially became known as. Now, the clothing giant is used by thousands of customers.

The brand has had deals with countless celebrities and influencers, such as Love Island star Mille Court and even Lewis Capaldi.

ASOS also owns Topshop - with the clothes only available exclusively on the website after the high street store went into administration in 2020.

IKEA also recently revealed the meaning behind its name. The first two letters refer to the name of its founder Ingvar Kamprad, while the last two letters refer to the name of a farm and a village that he grew up close to.

This comes as another online shopping giant Amazon launched its long-awaited Spring Sale. The unmissable event sees a number of deals on electronics, furniture, home accessories, Amazon electric products and outdoor furniture.
