DEHRADUN: The Dehradun circle office of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) celebrated its 20th establishment day on Friday, by undertaking a tree plantation drive at Jagatram, an ancient excavation site in Dehradun.
Jagatram is located near Vikas Nagar which is an almost 2,000-year-old site associated with Ashvamedha Yajna which was conducted by kings to prove their imperial sovereignty.
Ashvamedha Yajna finds mention in the Ramayana and Mahabharata as well as many other ancient texts. Excavated by ASI from 1952 to 1954, the site has remains of three fire altars, revealing that they were built in the eagle-shaped Syena Chiti form, where the bird is depicted with its wings spread.
