Ratings:
In terms of live viewership, Ash vs Evil Dead’s season two finale was one of the least watched episodes in series history… but there’s so little we actually know about the show’s viewership that it’s hard to judge what constitutes success for Starz.
Since the series’ beginning, Starz has gone in hard on marketing it as an experience best viewed non-linearly through the Starz app and/or Amazon add-on channel.
The problem for analysts is it leaves the show’s viewership in question. Especially now that it has been added to the Netflix library. It’s entirely possible the show’s audience could be in the millions. We simply have no way of knowing. It’s a reality for most premium cable series these days.
Review:
Evil Dead is a hard franchise to follow if one tries to honestly track the continuity of the series from story to story. The truth of the matter is the Evil Dead franchise is one of the least thought out series in Hollywood history.
However, there comes a point for fans of the property where a truth becomes apparent: it’s Evil Dead… it’s not supposed to make sense.
Following a controversial season finale that resulted in some behind-the-scenes shakeups, Ash vs Evil Dead comes back for its third season triumphant to not give a damn about what rules it breaks.
Put bluntly, this season is hitting all the checkmarks for what constitutes an Evil Dead story while also pushing the envelope farther than the series ever has with the things it’s become known for.
And yes, that means there are some truly insane, awe-inspiring and gruesome moments.
But, at the heart of it all remains Ash and his friends. They remain the constants among the insanity that is the show’s new season and make the whole thing worth watching.
The first five episodes fly by from one to the next at a breakneck pace that is unmatched by just about every other series on television. And the whole thing couldn’t care less about pesky little elements like “logic.”
It’s Evil Dead, a franchise where demons toy with their prey for absolutely no reason. There is no logic.
This season, the show embraces the essence of its source material in a way it never has before. Instead of trying to rise above the original movies it simply embraces and pushes them further.
Overall, fans are in for an insane ride that won’t soon be forgotten.
Ash vs Evil Dead premieres Sunday, February 25th at 9/8c on Starz
