Asda to close 'loss-making' Bristol store within months

Asda is gearing up to close two of its stores by the end of the summer, the supermarket has announced. The retailer has said its Asda Living stores, selling clothes, homeware, kitchenware, furnishings, and electronics would go, saying they had been operating at a loss for multiple years.

The sites to go include the Asda Living store in Eastgate Retail Park in Eastville, alongside the chain's Wrexham site at Island Green Retail Park, which is set to close on Monday, July 31. No date has been announced for the closure of the Bristol store, though it is expected to close this summer, BirminghamLive reports.

The closures come after bosses admit they have been "running at a loss" for a number of years. Earlier this year, the grocer launched a consultation on the future of the Wrexham store.

The store employs around 20 members of staff and Asda has said it will be doing everything possible to find the alternative roles in other local stores. An Asda spokesperson told The Mirror: “Despite the best efforts of our hard-working colleagues, our Asda Living store in Wrexham has been running at a loss for a number of years so unfortunately following a period of consultation we have decided to close the store.

"We recognise this will be a difficult time for colleagues at the store and we are in discussions with all of them to support them through this process, we will do all we can to find alternative roles in other local stores.”

The retailer launched its Asda Living brand in 2003, with both the Bristol and Wrexham stores opening in 2008. According to Asda, the supermarket has 33 Asda Living shops across the UK.

Asda is currently in the middle of launching its new smaller range of convenient stores called Asda Express. It plans to open 300 of these express stores by the end of 2026, having recently opened its third shop in Wiltshire on Tuesday, May 23. Most recently, it opened the doors to its first-ever Asda Express forecourt store.

Speaking of the new forecourt site, an Asda spokesperson said: “This is a refresh of one of our owned Asda forecourts and it’s been brought in line with our Asda Express brand as it is a site that, given the residential location, has been identified as having the potential to serve customer’s convenience needs.

“We know the Asda Express brand resonates with consumers, so bringing this proposition to our forecourts is an exciting test and learn activity for us.”

The Mirror contacted Asda for comment on the closures.
