Asda store now home to five cats - after they strolled in and made themselves comfortable

An Asda store is now home to five cats after they strolled in and made themselves comfortable.

The supermarket is known for its loyal customers, but now has a different kind of visitor that's appeared over the last year.

Regular shoppers at Asda in Pwllheli, Wales, are familiar with the sight of several cats settling down in the shop foyer.

The unusual scenario started about six to 12 months ago, when one cat routinely started visiting the store.

NorthWalesLive reported that bemused customers posted on local Facebook groups, unsure whether or not the white-and-tortoise-shell-coloured cat was a stray.

But her owner reassured the concerned customer she was very much loved and fed at home, and just enjoyed visiting the shop.

Staff did their best to discourage the pet from hanging around, but rather than leaving and never coming back, it instead invited its friends round.

There are now at least five different cats who sit in the foyer almost on a daily basis.

They visit the branch so much staff have been forced to put up signs asking their customers not to feed them.

Ciara Faulkner, ambient manager at the supermarket, said: "We try to encourage our customers not to feed them but obviously we can't monitor the situation constantly. We've tried ushering them out but they always come back.

"When the first cat started coming we did contact Freshfields and they came out to check but the cat did have an owner and was looked after.

"There's only so much we can do to prevent it and then it started bringing its mates too!

"We have had one or two customers who aren't very happy, but most people think it's cute. They just sleep there really, they're not causing any harm.

"At one time, one of the cats would actually come into the store and walk down the aisles but we kept putting it back out, I think it's got the hint now.

"Another one used to go round the back and through the warehouse and go upstairs."

It's not the first time a supermarket in the area has proven to be popular with cats.

An eight-year-old tabby named Brutus shot to fame because of his antics at a Morrisons store, where he would prowl around for hours.
