Asda shoppers rave about Just Essentials range a year on from its launch

Asda continues to impress budget-savvy shoppers with its yellow-label Just Essentials range. The value product range launched a year ago, in June 2022, to much fanfare with many shoppers excited at the low price points and wide range of products.

Now, with pennies pinched as tight as ever, shoppers are continuing to turn to the range to stock their cupboards. Stocked with more than 200 items from fresh fruit and veg to frozen fish and cupboard staples like jam and coffee, the range often has many products out of stock for weeks at a time.

Paired with Asda’s popular rewards scheme, the range has proved to be a big hit with shoppers. Customers have been reflecting on their experiences with the brand in a post on Facebook.

Many shoppers praised their favourite items in the range, with a lot of love for the 37p garlic bread combined with an extra helping of their mature cheddar at £2.69 for a 400g block. “It tastes beautiful,” said one bargain hunter.

Others confessed to favouring the pizzas over other brands or even takeaways. “My kids love the pizzas,” said one shopper. “Much better than branded ones and a great saving, too”.

The range includes cheese and tomato and pepperoni pizzas in three versions - chilled, chilled snack size and frozen. “The cheese and tomato pizza is our favourite, especially with some ham and extra cheese added on top.”

However, not all customers have been happy with the range. Many revealed that they find it nearly impossible to get their hands on the products as they are so regularly out of stock.

“My Asda never has any of these things in stock,” said one Facebook user. Another replied: “They may taste great but good luck getting your hands on them as they’re often out of stock or unavailable.”

Meanwhile, there are many shoppers who have not been impressed with the continuing rise in cost. Some items have increased in price by almost 45% according to the Manchester Evening News, which has been tracking the budget range since its launch.

The MEN found that a big shop of mostly yellow-label products has increased 26% between September 2022 and March 2023. Its reporter noted that a tin of chicken soup has increased by a staggering 87.5% from 24p to 45p.

Many customers have since confessed that despite switching their shopping to Asda to make use of the Just Essentials range, the price rises have seen them change to other supermarkets.

“I have noticed that things are going up in small amounts, not loads but it all adds up at the tills,” said one disappointed customer. While another admitted, “We were shopping loads with this but prices are creeping up too much now and it’s cheaper for us to go back to Aldi.”
