ASDA shoppers call for staff to be fired over 'unethical' £1.75 Jubilee party item

Supermarket giant ASDA has found itself in hot water with shoppers over a £1.75 item people are branding 'unethical'. The retailer has been slammed by shoppers over packs of pre-cut fruit ahead of the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

Posting on the popular Snack Reviews page, Craig Bullock shared a picture of pre-cut packs of fruit which are designed to go in summer drinks. He said: "Spotted at Asda."

There are two different packs:

  • Crisp and fragrant drink infusions - containing grapefruit and rosemary, and lemon and cucumber
  • Sweet and fruity drink infusions - containing orange and lemon, and orange, apple, strawberry and cucumber

The packs cost £1.75 each, and are available to buy in ASDA supermarkets now. But they've divided shoppers.

While some people had an issue with the price, others slammed the product for wasting unnecessary plastic. Others branded the product 'downright lazy'.

Nick Alchin said: "So its literally a bunch of sliced fruit in a plastic box, labelled for drink. (That will have gone off by the time you try and use it) Marketing team need to be fired ffs." Ryan McMaster wrote: "OR buy a whole lemon, a whole cucumber and a whole grapefruit, and have 10x as much for half the money."

Bluue Taylor moaned: "For that price it would be stupid to not just do it yourself." Rosemarie Thomas slammed: "If only fruit came in its own natural biodegradable packaging...."

Kayley Saunders wrote: "Save money buy the whole fruit also less unnecessary plastic!!" Pam Fretwell commented: "The world has gone mad."

Steven Robinson-Perry said: "More unnecessary plastic." Janine Powton said: "Would be so much cheaper to buy your own fruit and chop them up. The world is getting so lazy!"

However, some shoppers did see a use for the drinks packs, and said they'd buy one themselves. Charlie-Ann Keen said: "Not a bad shout if you’re having a last minute picnic with Pimm's and won’t have a way of cutting stuff yourself."

Emma Hall praised: "For somebody who struggles to use a knife and chop stuff this is brilliant." Maraied Murray-kemp pointed out: "These are yum in ice cold lemonade."

If you're looking to save money, then it's probably best to just buy items and chop them up yourself. But if you don't have the time, struggle to chop things or value the cost of your time more than the packets cost, then they're a brilliant option for summer drinks.
