ASDA praised for £1 food charge - now shoppers want Morrisons, Tesco, M&S and Sainsbury's to do the same

Supermarket giant ASDA has been praised by shoppers after issuing a £1 message to shoppers. Earlier this week, the retailer made an announcement that went down well with its customers.

The supermarket chain says it will be offering all kids a hot meal for £1 this summer. During the summer holidays, kids will be able to eat for just £1 a day.

Children across England and Wales will be able to get a hot or cold meal for £1 a day across all Asda cafes, seven days a week. Adults will not need to meet a minimum spend to gain access to this £1 deal. Children aged 16 and under can access a hot or cold meal for just £1. This initiative was launched in Scotland last month and has now been extended to England and Wales.

The chain says it hopes to be able to help families tackle holiday hunger by offering these meals. There are 156 cafes across England and Wales, There are 12 Asda stores in London and the meals will be dependent on if the cafe is open. If it is open, a cold or hot meal, or both, will be on offer.

Manchester Evening News shared the news on social media. The response was astounding.

Carole Kiely said: "Well done Asda! Many places do 'kids eat free', but with a minimum spend or amount of adults, which makes it more expensive than eating at home, but this is truly an amazing deal." Deborah Jayne Law wrote: "Such a disgraceful thing that we should as a nation have to rely on a supermarket to stand up and help fees our children because our government is dragging families into poverty. Without schemes such as this there will be many hungry children this summer Thankyou Asda and all other outlets and establishments for stepping up when our government won't."

Dorothy Clarke wrote: "Well done Asda, but I think it should be any age if still in full time education." Karina Barker said: "I think the fact you don’t have to buy an adult meal is a huge thing for many people. These “kids eat free as long as adults spend a tenner” promotions are fine if you have the tenner. It’s a sad state of affairs that this is obviously needed though."

Pam Clifford praised: "Well done Asda, cheaper than school meals for those that don’t qualify for free school meal. Shame the school cannot open their kitchens during school holidays." Bob White added: "Well done Asda and to all the other schemes that are doing something similar. But what a state of affairs it is , its 2022 not 1822 and we have such growing poverty in this country. This has not happened overnight or over one political party reign but been getting worse for decades and being brushed under the carpet. It's always some other country , no government likes to admit its here. Its about time we has a country get to grip with it. Charity begins at home."

Lisa Bowden said: "Well done Asda. That’s amazing. Nothing matters more than children and ensuring they are fed and well. Others should follow your lead."

Natasha Williams said: "Lowering your recent price hikes back down would be more beneficial." Margaret Fairgrieve complained: "None of our ASDA stores have their own cafés. Just Macdonald's!"

Josephine Gibson agreed: "This is great but more and more Asda stores don’t have a cafe any more. Ours is now McDonald’s and I’ve heard some are either Greggs or Costa - I bet they don’t follow suit."
