Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's issue huge petrol price change from tonight

Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons are lowering petrol prices after Rishi Sunak announced a cut to fuel duty of 5p per litre.

The Chancellor set forth the reduction - effective from 6pm today - in the Spring Statement today.

Asda and Sainsbury's followed suit by cutting costs to the tune of 6p per litre, including a 1p VAT reduction, from this evening.

Morrisons is also marking down prices by 5p per litre also from 6pm today.

Shoppers are calling for other supermarkets, as well as Shell and BP, to do the same.

Drivers have been paying record prices at the pumps in the weeks since Russia's invasion of Ukraine after oil costs mounted due to fears about supply.

The Chancellor said the fuel duty cut was equivalent to £5 billion of aid to motorists.

Asda was the first supermarket to make the cost-cutting move, followed by Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

A spokesperson for Asda said: "Following the announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer just now, Asda has confirmed it will pass the reduction in fuel duty announced in today's Spring Statement straight on to its customers.

"The supermarket will reduce the price at the pumps by 6p per litre which includes a 1p reduction in VAT.

"The new prices will be implemented from this evening. This means that motorists will see unleaded move back below 160ppl and Diesel to 170ppl."

Simon Roberts, Sainsbury's CEO, said: "Sainsbury's will continue to sell through stock it purchased while the higher fuel duty was in effect but is lowering the price for customers from tonight, so that they can benefit from the Chancellor's announcement sooner."

Morrisons announced: "Following the Chancellor's announcement, fuel prices at all Morrisons Petrol Station pumps will reduce by 5p per litre from 6pm tonight."
