Asda latest to ration eggs as supply issues continue to hit supermarkets

Customers are continuing to turn up to supermarkets to find eggs out of stock, while some branches are limiting sales. As reported by the Mirror, Asda is only letting customers buy two boxes of eggs each.

And in one Lidl branch, a ration of three egg boxes per customers has been put in place. It comes as many retailers across the country have been hit with a shortage as a knock-on effect of avian flu, the summer heatwave and rising costs for egg farmers.

Grocery Insight CEO Steve Dresser shared a picture of a ration notice sign in Lidl which read: "Eggs are limited to three units per customer to ensure that everyone has the essentials they need." Similar notices about shortages have been seen at the likes of Sainsbury's and Tesco.

One Tesco customer shared a notice that read: "Due to the hot summer we are currently experiencing low availability across our egg range. Sorry for any inconvenience."

And a notice in Sainsbury's said: "We are currently experiencing supply issues across our fresh egg range. We are working hard to resolve these and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The British Free Range Egg Producers Association has said farmers were being squeezed by the price of chicken feed - which spiked due to the war in Ukraine war - and rocketing energy costs. The Department Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), meanwhile, has denied there are any supply chain issues.

A spokesperson said: "We understand the difficulties the bird flu outbreak is causing for farmers, however the laying hen population is approximately 38million so it's unlikely to affect the overall supply."
