Asda joins Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsburys, Aldi and M&S in nationwide ban

Asda is the latest supermarket giant to join the nationwide ban which has been enforced at M&S, Aldi, Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons stores. The decision comes as the country bakes in a heatwave with temperatures soaring throughout the UK.

A temporary measure is being introduced at Asda stores preventing the sale of disposable barbecues as concerns grow over the fire risks associated with them during the hot weather. With tinderbox conditions and droughts being declared in several areas across the country, fire brigades have warned of the danger posed by the disposable barbecues.

A spokesperson for Asda said: “I can confirm that we are in the process of briefing our stores to temporarily pause the sale of disposable BBQs whilst the weather is so dry.” Similarly B&Q has removed them from sale.

M&S banned the sale of disposable BBQs earlier this summer during the first major UK heatwave, while Tesco, Sainsburys and other retailers swiftly followed. M&S had previously stopped selling them at stores near national parks and in London.

Meanwhile The Co-op announced in June last year that it would no longer sell disposable barbecues in 130 shops situated in or within a one-mile radius of national parks, while in March this year Aldi said it would no longer sell the items in any of its UK supermarkets in a bid to protect the nation’s forests and wildlife.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is backing a petition to Parliament to bring in a complete ban on the sale and use of disposable barbecues in the UK. An amber heat warning is currently in place with temperatures of up to 34C predicted this weekend.
