ASDA is making a kind gesture to all supermarket staff ahead of the extra May Bank Holiday

Supermarket chain ASDA has made a major announcement ahead of the Bank Holiday on May 8 - and it has nothing to do with stores closing. To celebrate the King's Coronation on May 8, the supermarket chain has made a decision that will affect all of its store staff.

ASDA has announced that any hourly paid store colleagues scheduled to work on Bank Holiday Monday (8th May), will be able to request a paid day off to participate in the ‘Big Help Out’ – a national day of volunteering to mark His Majesty The King’s Coronation.

Any colleagues who want to take part in the Big Help Out will be able to request to book a day off while still being paid and their holiday entitlement will not be affected. Those colleagues who choose to work on Monday 8 May will receive double time.

ASDA Chief People and Corporate Affairs Officer, Hayley Tatum, said: “We’re proud to mark the Coronation of King Charles III by supporting the ‘Big Help Out’ and enabling our colleagues to come together, celebrate and give back to their local communities.

“We understand that this is an incredibly important event for many of our colleagues, and they want to get involved, which is why we’re offering them the opportunity to take a day off to support their local area, without needing to use their holiday entitlement.

“We are also saying thank you to those colleagues who do choose to work on Monday 8th May by offering them a double time payment as a thank you for their continued efforts to serve our customers over the Bank Holiday weekend.”
