ASDA in hot water with shoppers over £1 gesture for those who can't afford food - but others want Tesco and M&S to follow

Last week ASDA issued a £1 message to millions of shoppers struggling to afford to eat. The supermarket giant impressed people so much, the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury's, M&S and Morrisons, are all being urged to do the same.

Asda is offering a soup, a roll and unlimited tea or coffee for over-60s for just £1. The deal will be available throughout November and December in any of the supermarket chain's 205 cafes. Mohsin Issa, Asda's co-owner , said: "We know that this winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and a fixed income.

Manchester Evening News shared the news on Facebook, where it quickly divided shoppers. While some praised the initiative, others slammed the retailer for only considering OAPs at a time when millions of young people are suffering financially at the same rate as, if not more than, OAPs.

"We've already been able to serve over half a million meals through our Kids Eat for £1 initiative in our cafes and we're hoping our new offer of soup and hot drinks for over-60s will prove just as impactful for those who need it most."

Zoe Tomlinson pointed out: "60 isn't old these days and not even pension age for someone. Young people need more help ....A lot of older ones are on good benefits with high disabled rates."

Rose Adams slammed: "60? A lot of 60 year olds I know are at the peak of their career.. How about also including the young homeless, single parents on benefits and others who cannot work for health reasons."

Fiona-Jane Kelly agred: "I always wish they'd offer stuff like this to younger disabled people, people who are going to be going without any heating this winter due to them not qualifying for the winter fuel payments due to their age." Richard Bakrania-Ashton suggested: "It’s the over 60 year olds that have all the cash."

Irene Towers praised: "That is really good wonder if any other super markets with cafes will do the same." Maureen Higginson agreed: "That's brilliant Asda well done to u it will help so many."

Donald Simpson said: "Brilliant idea....hope others follow this example." Ann Harrison wrote: "Wow that is just so kind, well done Asda."

ASDA told us: "We are supporting families and over 60s through our café offer because research from Asda's Income Tracker shows these two groups are the most affected by the cost of living crisis. We have served more than 557,000 Kids eat for £1 meals to families since June and we hope our Winter Warmers offer for the over 60's will prove just as popular'."
