Asda has made a huge change to discounts this week – and shoppers are not happy

Asda has announced a huge change to the discounts available to NHS and emergency workers.

The supermarket is reducing the scope of its Blue Light scheme, so fewer items qualify for money off.

Previously, shoppers would get an extra 10% back into their cashpots through the Asda Rewards app on a range of items.

This included: Clothing, homeware, fresh food, non-fresh foods pet and laundry products, health and beauty, baby items, outdoor goods and toys.

But from June 15, Asda shoppers can now only get an extra 10% cashpot boost when buying fresh food.

It comes just weeks after the supermarket moved Blue Light discounts to its Asda Rewards app.

Shoppers have taken to social media to express their frustrations.

One person said: “Not impressed with the Blue Light card changes, usually spend £150 a week in Asda, just nipped in and spent £42, and got 48p back, might as well go shop in Tesco again now, the discounts are better on the Clubcard.”
Another tweeted: “Disappointing to see @asda have massively reduced their Blue Light card discount to fresh items only from today, just a month or so after making everyone sign up to their app.”

A third said: “I see @asda are changing the rewards Blue Light card holders receive again…getting 10% back on virtually nothing. May as well go back to shopping in Aldi.”

The email sent by Asda to its customers reads: "We are getting in touch as you are a verified Blue Light member with Asda Rewards and we wanted to let you know that from Thursday 15 June, you may notice some changes to your current benefit.

"As part of the ongoing evolution of Asda Rewards, Blue Light Card holders will continue to receive 10% Cashpot benefit on all fresh products in our stores. However you may notice that other products are no longer included in the offer.

"You will continue to earn Asda Pounds on non-fresh food, clothing, health and beauty, household, entertainment and homeware products in the same way as other Asda Rewards users, and you’ll still be able to make the most of all the other Asda Rewards benefits to continue building your Cashpot."

A spokesperson from Asda said: "The ways that Rewards users can earn Asda pounds will continue to evolve over time to ensure that they remain relevant for all of our customers.

"We continue to offer Blue Light Card holders 10% back on all fresh purchases when they scan their Asda Rewards app."
