A bomb scare at an Asda supermarket in Staffordshire has seen the store shut off to the public.
A major police incident ensued on Thursday morning with the entrance to the store in Tunstall cordoned off by police
The entire length of Williamson Street - which runs between Asda and Matalan - was cordoned off by police around 11am.
There was a police car blocking the junction of High Street and Williamson Street and a PCSO at the other end.
The entrance to the Asda store is cordoned off. But traffic can still reach the Matalan retail park.
Staffordshire Police have confirmed that it follows 'reports of a suspicious package'. The alarm was raised earlier this morning.
A police spokesman said: "Officers are currently at Asda, in Tunstall, following reports of a suspicious package being found outside the store. Police were called at 8.30am.
"The store has been evacuated and a 100-metre cordon is in place. Roads surrounding the store have been closed, including Scotia Road. The Explosive Ordinance Disposal team are on their way to assess the package."
Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with any information should call the police on 101, quoting incident number 121 of 22 September, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
The Mirror has approached Asda for a statement regarding this unfolding incident.
