Asda Bedminster opens new Asian 'street food' stall

With its red and gold fringed lanterns and woks full of steaming noodles, it wouldn't look out of place in London's bustling Chinatown.

In fact, this new Asian 'street food' stall is in a much more unlikely location - Asda Bedminster.

The Bristol supermarket opened the Bam Tuk kiosk this week, filling the store with tempting scents of the Orient.

Shoppers are used to seeing pizza counters and hot delis in stores, but this appears to be an attempt to branch out.

Bedminster is only the second Asda branch in the UK to house the street food brand, after Minworth near Birmingham.

The addition comes after sushi counter Sushi Daily opened in the store, as reported last week.

A spokesperson for the supermarket giant described the concession as an "open-kitchen style concept, adding theatre to the in-store shopping experience".

Noodles, curries and rice dishes are available to buy from the counter, to eat immediately or take home, inspired by delicacies from across the continent including in China, Thailand and Indonesia.

Shoppers can watch as staff prepare their dish of choice from behind the perspex screen, or can pick up items ready to go from the heated shelves.

Asda closed many of its in-store fish and meat counters earlier this year and began to roll out grab and go hot food kiosks in their place.

In January, it predicted that the new counters will be in place across 150 out of its 631 stores by the end of this year.

At the time, its senior manager of Food for Now said: "The success of our counters trials last year shows there is a demand for an offer which is better aligned with our customers’ lifestyles.

"The popularity of our sushi concessions and international cuisine, along with 'Food for Now' options shows there has been a shift in customer behaviour and there is a need to provide a greater choice in our stores."

The changes have been met with mixed reaction.

One shopper said in a tweet that the appearance of a sushi counter had "come as a bit of a shock."

However, another tweeted: "In my absolute element I will not be eating anything but sushi for the foreseeable."
