Asda and Morrisons to slash prices amid cost of living crisis to win back customers

The cost of living has hit many people hard this year with the likes of national insurance and energy bills rising yet again.

In addition to this, motorists have also seen their bills rise with a steeper figure printed on their receipts.

Sadly the list of increases grows with people now having to cut down on their usual food shop thanks to common weekly products rising in price too.

Recent industry data shows more people are ditching named brands in favour of the supermarkets own-label products in a bid to save money.

Due to the rising costs, people are also turning to budget friendly stores such as Aldi and Lidl. However Tesco and Sainsbury's are said to have Aldi price-matching campaigns which have been performing better than Morrisons and Asda.

Because of this, both stores are now trying to win back customers, according to the BBC, with Morrisons saying they would offer an average 13% price cut on more than 500 goods. These are said to include eggs, beef and rice.

Meanwhile Asda announced it has "dropped and locked in" prices on some products until the end of the year which includes items such as some fresh fruit and vegetables as well as fresh meat and frozen food.

Morrisons, the UK's fourth-largest supermarket, said their cuts would also cover refrigerated, frozen and store cupboard food and affect around six per cent of its total sales volume.

Overall, the discounted items are said to include cereal, cooking sauces, chicken and sausages as well as flour, bread and ham.

Boss David Potts said: "We know that our customers are under real financial pressure at the moment and we want to play our part in helping them when it comes to the cost of grocery shopping."

Mohsin Issa, co-owner of Asda added: "We know that household budgets are being squeezed by an increasing cost of living and we are committed to doing everything we can to support our customers, colleagues and communities in these exceptionally tough times."
