'Asbestos' left dumped on street with children spotted 'jumping and climbing' on it

‘Asbestos’ has been left dumped on an Ayrshire street with primary school children spotted ‘jumping on it’.

The pile of building waste has been left abandoned at a car park in Kincaidston Drive, Ayr, sparking concern amongst residents that it contains the toxic spores.

It is believed the deadly material has lain on the street since Tuesday with neighbours keen for it be safely removed.

Kincaidston resident Don Young, 35, was shocked to discover the dangerous substance was left ditched on a street which is the main route to the primary school.

The dad-of-one told Ayrshire Live: “It’s been dumped really close to a school on the street where all the kids walk by. It shouldn’t be there, it's dangerous.

“On Wednesday just after 3pm I could see kids in their uniforms playing on it and jumping up and down, and climbing all over the top of it.

“I first passed it on Tuesday night when I was out walking my dog. I thought it was corrugated roof slates at first.

“I walked past on Wednesday and my dog went over to it, when I got a closer look I realised it was asbestos.

“I’ve had asbestos before in the house when I was doing some work, it is recognisable, this stuff looks like cement but it is dusty and has fibres coming off it.

“The most dangerous point is once it is disturbed, so children playing on it is very worrying.

“When I found it in the house, I had to bag it up three times and dispose of it properly, this has just been dumped here.”

Councillor Brian McGinley confirmed asbestos fears with the council scrambling to arrange a specialist contractor to remove it.

The alarm was raised on with South Ayrshire Council on Thursday morning but as of 5pm on Friday, the material was still on the street.

The councillor for Ayr East told Ayrshire Live: “I passed it on to a council officer who told me it was asbestos and will need to be uplifted by a specialist contractor.

“I’ll work to try and get it removed over the weekend.”

Ayrshire Live contacted South Ayrshire Council for comment.
