As seen in Home Beautiful magazine this month

Home Beautiful’s July issue embraces the winter chill to find inspiration in cosy creature comforts for your home. Starting with 10 ways to save on those crippling energy bills by running your home heating more efficiently, we also rug up with the fun stuff with gorgeous winter decor, home decorating for winter and what’s new in curtains and blinds to keep the cold outside where it belongs.

From the editor

July sees our annual colour and decorating special, with a spotlight on colour – starting with American designer and artist Josh Young, who’s home (as seen on the cover) is a journey in texture, form, layers and nostalgia. Closer to home, interior designer Nick Barnes of Lawrence Barnes Creative worked his magic on a Georgian classic home in Brisbane to create a soulful abode.

Elsewhere in the mag, we’re turning up the heat in the kitchen with a suite of spicy Asian recipes from the divine Jessica Brook. From a new take on fried rice to a fragrant, slow-braised beef curry and a sticky glazed pork, it’s the perfect way to warm up for winter.

What struck me most of all is how much we continue to love Home Beautiful, as if it were a family member.

Elle Lovelock, editor-in-chief

Meanwhile, a project very close to our hearts is beginning to take shape as we start to share our journey to celebrate 100 years of Home Beautiful. We’ve been looking back over the incredible body of work that has gone into creating a magazine for a century, and we’re all feeling both nostalgic and elated, excited for the next 100 years of making homes beautiful!

Beautiful design: Is this design trick the secret to effortless flow in your home?

There are the spaces we move through in a moment, such as hallways and staircases, and the rooms we only use for specific, fleeting tasks, like pantries and walk-in robes. These serve important purposes yet are often overlooked as we rarely linger in them. HB features editor Brittany Smith explores these liminal spaces in our homes.

Beautiful design: An Art Deco bathroom brings heritage charm to a modern home

Travelling further back in time was the secret to style success in this Art Deco bathroom. Situated in a 1920s California bungalow on Sydney’s North Shore, the space was a relic of the 1980s until Lauren Mahoney, creative director of Studio Trio, stepped onsite.

Beautiful Homes:

1. How interior designer Nick Barnes created a soulful Brisbane haven

Keeping its historic significance intact. Brisbane designer Nick Barnes of Lawrence Barnes Creative channelled nature to work his magic for the new owners of a classic Georgian home. “He has transformed these rooms into sanctuaries that we absolutely love spending time in,” the owners share. Nick shares a masterclass of design with us as the step-by-step process of transformation.

“Use natural elements to bring the outdoors in. Fresh foliage, moss and florals breathe life into a space while subtly mirroring the beautiful surroundings.”

2. A Nantucket style home in Palm Beach comes with a family legacy

The future looks bright for this weatherboard haven in Sydney’s Palm Beach, blending old-world charm with enduring style. “I love displaying the beautiful things that I have,” says homeowner and interior designer Belinda. “I put all of our best china out because I think, why else would you have it, if not to show it?”

3. The traditional style of this homestead in Victoria is an ode to country life

Stepping through the door at Kinvonvie, where dappled sunlight plays across pale oak floorboards, you’re met with quiet, understated luxury. The worn boots, polo mallets tucked into an Indian grain vessel, a collection of Akubra hats and baskets brimming with pine cones offer visual cues that this home’s heart is in the country; a working sheep property and the base for homeowner Tim’s stable of thoroughbred polo ponies.
