Luke Ayling could have another opportunity to stake a claim for a starting place against Manchester City when Leeds United host AS Monaco on Wednesday. Ayling - who has played just 153 minutes of Premier League football so far this season - has started each of Leeds' two winter friendlies.
In fact, the 31-year-old has played 90 minutes in both matches, playing the majority as a centre back amid Robin Koch and Diego Llorente's injuries. It is not a position unfamiliar to Ayling having filled in there several times before in his Leeds career and he may have to do it again when the Premier League champions head to Elland Road.
Rasmus Kristensen appears to have the right back spot nailed down currently, which has restricted Ayling's minutes, but injuries elsewhere may open the door. It feels unlikely either Koch or Llorente will be fit to face Monaco and while Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper are both available, the former may also have to fill in at left back depending on Junior Firpo's availability.

What Ayling does add in that position is balance, with Struijk and Cooper both left footed. Ayling has the passing ability to improve Leeds' build up from the back and given how involved he has been in the friendlies, a start against City looks more than possible irrespective of whether Koch and/or Llorente are fit.
Monaco will provide Ayling with another chance to plant another seed in Jesse Marsch's head that is he ready and a strong performance could be what tips the balance in his favour.
