As Mamata Banerjee walks on treadmill holding a puppy, here are a few dos and don'ts to know

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has shared a new video of hers where she is seen walking on a treadmill. In the video we see the CM clad in a saree holding a small puppy in her hands and walking at a medium pace.

"Somedays you need some extra motivation!," she captions the video.

While the 68 year old politician's workout is a reminder that age should not stop someone from working out, it also draws our attention to several dos and don'ts one need to follow while walking on treadmill.

1. Do not forget to warm up before a walking session over the treadmill. Skipping warm up can put unnecessary stress on the muscles and tendons. Warm up session stretch the connective tissue so that the risk of injury on the hamstrings, glutes and hip muscles is reduced to a large extent.

2. Do not be zoned out while walking. If you feel lost, then maybe music or a podcast can help you concentrate. Not paying attention while walking can trip you off the machine and being thrown off a running machine can cause severe damage to the legs.

3. Do not stick to one speed and pattern of running on the treadmill. You need to find the right kinds of running and jogging that are suitable for your body. Doing variation of runs is likely to work more effectively than doing one form of running at a time.

4. Do not stare downwards. Many people tend to look at their feet while walking. However, doing this affects your balance and posture. Running over a treadmill with your face positioned downwards is likely to sprain your spinal cord. To avoid that, maintain a firm and straight position.

5. Do not take long strides. To burn up extra calories you need to workout as long as you can by taking shorter steps. Longer strides can make you fall and is likely to affect your posture and balance over the treadmill.

6. Avoid distractions. Holding on something while walking again nullifies the benefits of walking over the treadmill. Make sure the arms are in a proper position and parallel to the ground.
