'As bad as anyone' - Jamie Carragher slams Liverpool after Brighton embarrassment

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the Reds have one of the most flawed defences in the Premier League and their blushes are only spared by the excellence of goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The Reds slumped to a sixth Premier League defeat of the season at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon as a brace from Solly March and a late goal from Danny Welbeck ensured Roberto de Zerbi's side claimed a well-deserved victory, which sees Liverpool slip to eighth in the Premier League table - seven points off the top four.

Taking to Twitter, Carragher, who featured over 700 times for the Reds during his playing career, echoed the thoughts of many supporters after another uninspiring display.

"Liverpool are as bad defensively as anyone in the Premier League right now," tweeted the Sky Sports Pundit. "Fortunately they have the best keeper which means they aren’t further down the table."

The Brazil international, along with Ibrahima Konate, was perhaps the only member of the Reds' squad who could depart the Amex with his head held high in some regards as he prevented Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson from adding to the Seagulls' early second half lead.

The victory sees Brighton leapfrog Liverpool and move into seventh place in the Premier League table as they continue their year-on-year ascendency since being promoted in 2017. Meanwhile, Liverpool's chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League now appear to rest on their success in this season's competition, with a seven-point gap to Newcastle United looking unlikely to be shortened anytime soon.
