As Ange Postecoglou gets mad at the media, an Irish hero leaps to his defence

Shay Given has leapt to the defence of former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou as the Australian continues to come under fire for Tottenham Hotspur's erratic form.

Given, of course, was once on Celtic's books before spending his entire senior career playing between the sticks in the English Premier League.

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast (via 67HailHail), the former Ireland internationalist introduced the conversation about Postecoglou's tenure at Spurs by referring to himself as a 'Glasgow Celtic supporter'.

He said: "Well, as a Glasgow Celtic supporter, I thought he was a hero in Glasgow and did an unbelievable job.

"And I just think I would love to see them stick with him. I really would, because going back, even when we played, Tottenham were always an entertaining team to play.

"They were always on the front foot, always scoring goals, creating chances. I think that’s the way Tottenham like to play."

Following Tottenham's 6-3 defeat to Liverpool last week, Postecoglou appeared frustrated with repetitive questions from the media regarding his tactics and perceived lack of pragmatism.

Given believes the solution lies somewhere between compromise and what Spurs are doing right now, but in any event underlined the fact he wants the Australian to remain in the dugout.

Given added: "It’s just about getting more sort of balance in the team.

“It’s not all gung-ho. It’s game management. Call it what you want. A bit more discipline without the ball, perhaps and being harder to beat because they are leaking goals for fun.

“But I would like to see him supported in January and at least give him to the end of the season and see where they end up.”
