Aryna Sabalenka Advances To U.S. Open Final

Emma Navarro, of the United States, wipes her face during the women's singles semifinals against Aryna Sabalenka, of Belarus, of the U.S. Open tennis championships, Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, in New Yor

Aryna Sabalenka secured her spot in the U.S. Open final for the second consecutive year after defeating Emma Navarro in a hard-fought semifinal match. The No. 2-seeded Sabalenka, known for her aggressive style of play, clinched a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over the 13th-seeded Navarro on Thursday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sabalenka, a two-time Australian Open champion, fell short in last year's U.S. Open final against Coco Gauff but showed her determination to go one step further this time. Despite facing an American opponent once again, Sabalenka managed to maintain her composure and control the match, only facing resistance from Navarro in the second set.

Navarro, to her credit, put up a strong fight in the second set, breaking Sabalenka's serve when she served for the match at 5-4. However, Sabalenka regrouped in the tiebreaker, winning seven consecutive points to secure her spot in the final.

In the championship match, Sabalenka will face either Jessica Pegula or Karolina Muchova. Pegula, the No. 6 seed, recently scored a significant victory over top-seeded Iga Swiatek to reach the semifinals, while Muchova, an unseeded player from the Czech Republic, has a history of success in Grand Slam tournaments.
